Sun's photos mainly reflected the army life on the islands at the beginning of his career, and then he realized that he should take some documentary photos to record history, not merely for awards or prize. So he no longer attended the photographic competitions but rather honed himself to become a better photographer.
Sun issued a commentary about photographic theory in the early 1980s. After his commentary was accepted by some local photographers at an exhibition held in his city, he returned to writing comments, and he paid more attention to photographic theories. With the publication of his Misconception of Chinese Folk Photography, Sun became renowned the photography world in Henan and throughout China. Having realized the lack of authentic photographic criticism, Sun tended to study writing tangible critical ones. Afterwards he specially set up columns on Peoplephoto and China Photo Press to write articles about folk photography with which he was more familiar with.
