"The traditional (Chinese) operas are highly diverse, for example, Shanxi opera, or Sichuan opera, and they have their own distinct features and represent the essence of traditional Chinese culture. But, even though there are still some small local troupes around, they have few performers and a limited influence, and they really need to be protected," Wang said as a staunch advocate of government support for the form.
