In Europe, heavy snowfall has caused havoc throughout the region, with the closing of schools and offices and widespread traffic chaos.

Overnight storms in France dumped a thick blanket of snow and ice over much of the country's north.

Officials say the weather conditions have led to almost 200 kilometers of backed-up morning traffic throughout Paris and nearly as much in snow-hit regions outside the capital.

In Britain's capital London, residents enjoyed the unexpected day off and took to the many parks to frolic in the snow.

The city saw accumulations of up to about 10 centimeters of snow, causing East London's City Airport to close.

Southeast England has been hardest hit by the winter storm, with up to 25 centimeters of snow reported in some areas.

Light snow also hit the Belgian capital of Brussels, covering most of it in white.
