A renowned Chinese artist has been chosen to design a replacement for the symbolic Little Mermaid, the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs announced on Tuesday.
Copenhagen's iconic statue of The Little Mermaid, known from H.C. Andersen's fairy tale, is scheduled to arrive in China next April to be on display for the 2010 World Expo. As it stays in Shanghai as part of the Danish pavilion for six months, two attractions will attempt to take its place on the city scene.
Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been chosen by the Danish government to design a replacement for the much-visited spot.A video installation will be put where the famed statue currently sits, according to the ministry statement, the new artwork, is to reflect connection and difference between the Chinese and Danish cultures.
Ai is best known for his work on Beijing National Stadium, or the ‘Bird’s nest’, built for the 2008 Olympic Games.
