Olympic organizers brought down the curtain on a celebration of sport with a closing ceremony that was very British in its makeup and a final day of competition with more medals for the host nation.
The main stadium in London was transformed from an athletics track to a venue which housed 80,000 fans, athletes and officials for what organizers are billing as the greatest after-party on earth.
Team Great Britain chiefs reflected on a medals table which shows Britain in third with more than 60 medals – more than they won in Sydney and Athens combined. And those who guided the team to that medal haul were clearly still basking in their success.
UK fans arriving at Olympic Park on Sunday were in no doubt they'd witnessed the greatest Olympics in modern history.
