Powerful quake in Indonesia kills 7; dozens hurt

JAKARTA: A powerful earthquake in Indonesia has killed at least 7 people and injured dozens of others.
Officials and local media report damage in several towns and cities near the epicenter and dozens of people are being treated in hospitals across the region. The quake struck at 2:55 pm (0755 GMT) off the southern coast of the main island of Java with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0. The US Geological Survey says it had a depth of about 30 miles (50 kilometers). A tsunami alert was issued but revoked less than an hour later. The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency put the quake's strength at 7.3. |
