How many people can change a light bulb, wire a plug correctly, do basic household repairs properly? These are basic life skills like cooking, first aid, clothes repair, balancing a household budget.

Being able to understand international finance does not equip a person for day to day living, and when something goes wrong you are at the mercy of a plumber, electrician etc.

Having said that, the level of skill of the aforementioned plumber, electrician is quite low in China, as I have experienced.
