Perspectives on the importance of Xi-Biden summit

China Daily Global | Updated: 2023-11-16 15:14

Sourabh Gupta, senior fellow at the Washington-based Institute for China-America Studies

The fact that it was not just at a conference center or a meeting hall, but at a very specific location where they were ensconced together, and they have that walk (that) reminded me frankly of President Xi when he came in 2013 for the Sunnylands meeting.

And Sunnylands started a process in US-China relations which blossomed in the next two years in that Obama administration. This was the Sunnylands meeting in California in 2013 between Obama and President Xi.

And then there were a lot of deliverables coming out in 2013, 2014 and 2015, including a state visit. However, the competition will remain, the export controls, and there will be technology competition, really technology conflict, and decoupling in terms of supply chains.
