The evolution of modern Western painting is showcased at an ongoing exhibition, From Monet to Soulages, at Beijing's Tsinghua University Art Museum through Aug 31.
On show are dozens of paintings that exemplify the art movements beginning from the early 19th century to the 1980s. The featured styles comprise realism, impressionism, symbolism, cubism and surrealism.
The paintings are from the collection of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Etienne Metropole. The institution has one of France's largest collections of 20th- and 21st-century art.
The exhibition is a highlight of this year's Festival Croisements, a Sino-French exchange event.
