Denuclearization on agenda at inter-Korean summit

During their first meeting, Kim thanked Moon for his efforts to make the DPRK-US summit in June a reality.

"North-South [DPRK-ROK] relations, North [DPRK] -US relations have improved. President Moon helped find the start of the historic North Korea [DPRK] -US talks," Kim told Moon, according to Yonhap.

Moon called for more progress during talks with Kim.

"I wish this will be a summit that produces abundant results as a gift to the 80 million people of this nation for Chuseok," Moon said, referring to one of the major traditional holidays for Koreans, which fell on Monday when family members gathered to give thanks to their ancestors.

"The entire world is also watching, so (I) hope we will show the fruits of peace and prosperity to all people in the world," Moon said.

Moon and Kim had a two-hour-long talks Tuesday afternoon at the headquarters of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK).

Kim greeted Moon on Tuesday morning with an embrace as the ROK leader landed in the DPRK's capital to revive momentum in talks over denuclearization of the peninsula and advance the prospect of formally ending the Korean War.

A welcome banquet for visiting Moon is held shortly after the meeting.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday that China welcomed the two sides' move to implement the Panmunjom Declaration and promote reconciliation and cooperation.

He said Beijing will continuously support Pyongyang and Seoul to improve relations and make contributions to long-term stability on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

This is the first inter-Korean summit in DPRK's capital Pyongyang in 11 years.

Major moments would be broadcast live for the first time. Two former ROK presidents visited Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007 for summit meetings with then-DPRK leader Kim Jong-il, the father of the current leader, but they were not aired live.

The two leaders held their first summit in the border village of Panmunjom on April 27, followed by their second meeting there on May 26.
