Jacky Cheung to wrap up world tour in January

Hong Kong pop star Jacky Cheung will conclude his two-year world tour, The Classic Tour, in January with 15 performances at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

The 57-year-old Cheung, one of the best-selling singers from Hong Kong, has given 191 shows with the tour so far, which kicked off in Beijing in October 2016.

Cheung, acclaimed as the "King of Pop" because of his long-lasting career in showbiz, has also gained a new title during the tour: "Fugitive Trapper". That's because over 20 suspects on the run have been arrested by police at his concerts from April to September, including a dozen people who were apprehended at his show in Xianyang, Shaanxi province, on Sept 30.

Asked about his unlikely association with crime-fighting, Cheung says that his first reaction was "why", and then he learned that police are relying on artificial intelligence or facial recognition software to catch criminals.

"The country is employing advanced technologies to solve problems and they would be caught by the police anyway, and could be anywhere, in a supermarket or a concert," he says. "We just need to do the right things."

He first became associated with running fugitives in April when a known criminal was identified with the help of facial recognition software at his gig at Nanchang, East China's Jiangxi province.

In the following weeks, two more fugitives were caught at separate performances, also with the help of the new technology.

The incidents stirred discussions online, with fans amazed at Cheung's popularity among criminals.

Cheung, who launched his career in 1984 by winning a singing competition in Hong Kong, has sold more than 25 million records in his decades-long career.
