California governor declares state of emergency in San Bernardino county

LOS ANGELES - Governor of California Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency in San Bernardino County on Saturday morning, following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that rattled Southern California residents Friday evening.

The Governor's Office of Emergency Services shall provide local government assistance to San Bernardino County, he said in a statement.

The office shall also ensure adequate state staffing to expedite disaster response and recovery efforts, the governor said.

Southern California was shaken by two earthquakes, a 6.4 magnitude on July 4 and a 7.1 on July 5.

Newsom had previously declared a state of emergency in Kern County on July 4.

The two earthquakes caused widespread structural damage to roads, waterlines and gas lines, which resulted in some structural fires in the regions. No fatalities or injuries had been reported.
