Brother of school shooting victim to run for Republican office 2020

WASHINGTON - The brother of a Sandy Hook school victim announced his candidacy for the Connecticut Senate in a Twitter video on Monday, local media reported.

JT Lewis, the 19-year-old brother of Jesse Lewis who lost his life in a school shooting in 2012, plans to challenge the incumbent Republican Sen. Tony Hwang of Fairfield in the upcoming 2020 election.

Lewis said political leaders have fell short of stopping the violence his family experienced as he and his mom never heard back from Hwang, who has served in the Senate since 2015.

"The little boy who just wanted someone to hear his mom's call for help is grown up," Lewis said in the video.

"I believe that inside every one of us is that same innate courage and to honor Jesse. I've decided to be courageous enough to run for state senate in my home state," said Lewis.

On Dec 14, 2012, a deranged gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and killed 28 people, including 20 children and eight adults.
