A donation of 91.9 metric tons worth of medical supplies was delivered to Shanghai by Qatar Airways on Feb 22.

The donation was initiated by Akbar Al Baker, the Group CEO of Qatar Airways, who had to postpone his planned trip to Shanghai in mid-February due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. The supplies to the city consist of 435,000 face masks and 163,000 bottles of disinfectant.

The Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries said Akbar Al Baker had sent a letter on Feb 17 to express his support and admiration of China's efforts in controlling the epidemic and sharing of information with the world. He also promised in the letter to help Chinese embassies transport supplies through the airline's extensive flight network.

He then delivered his promise on Feb 22, when five cargo planes flew a total of 300 tons worth of medical supplies to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
