Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopia's prime minister, won the country's June 21 elections after his ruling Prosperity Party won 410 of the 436 parliamentary seats.

The results announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia on Saturday will see Ahmed retain his post for the next five years.

On his Twitter account, Ahmed described the vote as a "historically inclusive election", adding, "Our party is also happy that it has been chosen by the will of people to administer the country", Reuters reported.

Conflict-ridden areas in the country did not participate in the general elections, which were postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elections in those areas apart from Tigray has been slated for Sept 6, while the country's new government is expected to be formed in October.

The elections were viewed as a test for the prime minister, 44, who took office in April 2018, following the resignation of his predecessor, Hailemariam Desalegn, amid deadly unrest.

In the next five years as the prime minister, Ahmed will be faced with the challenge of reuniting the second most populous country in Africa, rebuilding the country's reputation internationally and attracting foreign investors.
