Do university rankings matter?

There is no need for Chinese universities to follow international rankings. What they really need is to produce skilled, educated academics whose qualifications are wanted by employers today.

It is very much possible a Chinese university succeeds at churning out qualified, knowledgeable and skilled scholars by Chinese labor market standards, and that such a university will become a beacon to the world.
