Three Chinese men suspected of kidnapping and killing a Chinese woman in Thailand and then returning to China have been detained in Wenzhou, a city of Zhejiang province, local police said on Wednesday.
The Wenzhou Public Security Bureau announced the detention on its official account on Sina Weibo, Chinese Twitter-like platform, on Wednesday afternoon.
In a statement posted by the bureau, the police said that they received a report from a local family on Friday claiming that their 20-year-old daughter surnamed Jin was kidnapped in Thailand, and the kidnappers demanded a ransom of 500,000 yuan ($72,676).
The police filed a case and started the investigation after the report, learning through the international police cooperation channel that the hostage had been killed and that three Chinese men, who are major suspects, had returned to China by flight from Thailand, the statement said.
Under the coordination of the Ministry of Public Security and with the effort of police in Hebei province, the three suspects were captured in Xiangyang, Hubei province on Monday, according to the statement.
All the suspects are natives of Xingtai, Hebei, the report said, revealing that the oldest is 24 and the other two are both 22.
The case is under further investigation, it added.
China's embassy in Thailand responded on Tuesday that it has attached great importance to the case after receiving the report from the Thailand police. In addition to telling the information to the victim's family members and offering them aid, it added that it would also urge the Thailand police to try its best to solve the case.
Thaiger, a form of Thailand media, earlier reported that the victim was a music student at the Bangkok Thonburi University, and her body was discovered in central Nonthaburi of the country on Saturday.
