Shenzhen suspended classes on Friday as record rainfall hit the city overnight, leaving the ports of Liantang and Wenjindu temporarily closed and causing several streets in the city to turn into rivers.

"Due to the heavy rainfall on Sept 7, the underground facilities of Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port have been flooded, and some facilities and pieces of equipment have been damaged. After consultations between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the clearance services at Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port are temporarily suspended from the time of this announcement until further notice," announced a statement from local authorities.

"During the suspension of services at Wenjindu Port and Liantang Port, fresh food vehicles bound for Hong Kong will be redirected to Huanggang Port, and other freight trucks can be redirected to Shenzhen Bay Port. Private cars at Wenjindu and Liantang ports can be redirected to Huanggang and Shenzhen Bay ports," the statement added.

Meanwhile, the district of Luohu had authorized a one-day work suspension while flood discharge started at midnight on Friday as the water level of Shenzhen Reservoir approached the flood limit.

According to Shenzhen municipal government, the discharge flow rate was 70-80 cubic meters per second and residents in Futian district, Luohu district and Longgang district are advised to stay away from river areas and closely monitor flood discharge information, taking timely safety precautions.

According to an emergency notification from the Shenzhen Public Transport Administration, due to the impact of the heavy rainfall, the basement entrance and exit of Shenzhen Railway Station (Luohu) have been flooded, and passenger entry and exit cannot be organized normally before 12:00 noon on Friday.
