Born in Qian'an county in Jilin in 1960, Wang witnessed the low grain production in his hometown when he was young. So when he was admitted to Jilin Agricultural University in 1979, he secretly vowed to do something for his hometown after completing his studies.

After graduating from the university in 1983, he devoted himself to research and developed new techniques for corn cultivation in the province, such as irrigation on soda saline-alkali land, special fertilizer and black soil protection.

Wang's high-yield corn research achievements won second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award judging in 2009 and 2019.

"The happiest moment for me is to see my research technology being applied," he said. "I hope that I can help more farmers make more money."

He added: "My most important task is to tap into the potential for increased yields in black soil and strive to achieve new highs in corn yields."
