Hailing from a musical lineage, Li, whose parents both contributed to the China National Symphony Orchestra, received his early cello training from his father, the celebrated cellist Li Zhongping.

Li Yang further honed his craft at the New England Conservatory in the United States, studying under renowned cellists David Hartford and David Finckel, before continuing his musical journey at the State University of New York. He was privileged to receive guidance from the celebrated Russian virtuoso Vagram Sarajian and the late cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich.
