The progress made in China's transportation sector is driving the country's high-quality development in 2024, the Ministry of Transport said at a news conference on Friday.

Li Yang, vice-minister of transport, said that the country's comprehensive transport network has been significantly improved, now spanning 6 million kilometers. Several key projects were completed this year, including the Shenzhen-Zhongshan cross-sea link.

The number of passenger trips is projected to reach 64.5 billion for the year 2024, with an average of 180 million trips daily, reflecting a 5.2 percent year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, freight volume is expected to increase to a total of 56.5 billion metric tons, with a daily average of 150 million tons, marking a 3.5 percent year-on-year rise. Port cargo throughput is forecasted to reach 17.5 million tons, representing a 3.4 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to Li.

Economic policies introduced in September have further fueled transport development. In November, both freight volume and port cargo throughput increased, rising by 4.2 percent and 3.7 percent year-on-year, respectively, Li noted.

Progress has also been made in enhancing international connectivity. This year, new routes have been established between China and Europe via the China-Europe Trans-Caspian Express, as well as between China and Latin America through Peru's Chancay Port, Li added.

Despite ongoing challenges, Li said that even greater achievements in the transportation sector are expected in 2025.
