Shanghai to further expand green ecological spaces

Shanghai will continue to expand and optimize green ecological spaces around the Huangpu River, Suzhou Creek, and the belt of ecological parks, said Mayor Gong Zheng when delivering the Shanghai Municipal Government Work Report on Jan 15.

The report was released at the third session of the 16th Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, the city's legislative body.

It aims to promote the extension of the Huangpu River shoreline from the south to the north and to connect more than 45 gaps in the outer ring greenway in Shanghai.

In addition, the city will add 120 new parks, 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) of forests, 130 kilometers of greenways, 1,000 hectares of green spaces, and 400,000 square meters of vertical greening.

Shanghai has formulated and implemented a new round of plans for the construction of a people's city and a three-year action plan for refined urban management.

It aims to improve the supporting facilities of the waterfront spaces along the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek, upgrade the lighting of 14 bridges along the Suzhou Creek, and move 134 kilometers of electricity lines underground.

Moreover, it will complete the upgrade of 102 community blocks, and open 52 facilities affiliated with government agencies, enterprises, and institutions, for public use.
