The China Coast Guard on Tuesday accused a Philippine coast guard vessel of repeatedly and dangerously crossing the navigation route of a Chinese ship near Huangyan Island in the South China Sea.
According to the CCG, the Chinese ship Zhongnanwas conducting a routine patrol Monday morning when the Philippine coast guard vessel 4409made four close passes in front of its bow without prior notice and abruptly approached the Chinese vessel, the CCG said.
The Chinese side issued repeated warnings and took steps to manage the situation before eventually repelling the Philippine ship, according to the CCG statement.
"After the incident, the Philippine side disregarded the facts and distorted the truth, using media outlets to stir up stories and provoke public debates," the CCG said.
The CCG accused the Philippines of violating international laws and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea by approaching in a dangerous manner that jeopardized the safety of the Chinese crew and vessel.
The Chinese coast guard emphasized that its actions were lawful and professional, and said the responsibility for the encounter "lies entirely with the Philippine side."
The CCG said it would continue to counter such moves, enhance control over relevant maritime areas, and resolutely defend China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
