Director Yuen Woo-ping said that the core of the martial arts spirit — trust, duty, and perseverance — never changes.

"We want to spare the sermons and simply use this martial world in the turbulent later Sui Dynasty to shine a light on each character's unique choices and their yearning for freedom," added Yuen.
