ByteDance-backed Volcano Engine says Doubao model hits 120t daily tokens

Token usage of the Doubao large language model has surged past 120 trillion per day, its operator Volcano Engine said on Thursday, underscoring explosive enterprise demand for generative AI services in China.

To expand its developer ecosystem, Volcano Engine also said it has partnered with Peter Steinberger, founder of the OpenClaw open-source project, to launch a China mirror site for ClawHub, aimed at improving access for domestic developers and fostering broader adoption of its agent framework.

The cloud and AI platform, owned by ByteDance, also announced that its Seedance 2.0 API has entered public beta for corporate users, as it accelerates commercialization of its AI stack.

Volcano Engine said Doubao's daily token consumption has doubled over the past three months and expanded roughly 1,000-fold since its launch in May 2024.

The number of enterprise clients with cumulative token usage exceeding one trillion has risen to 140, up from 100 at the end of last year.

Tan Dai, president of Volcano Engine, said, "Token usage is a core metric for measuring the pace of AI development. Such rapid growth is because of a boom in AI-powered video generation and the faster adoption of AI agents."

The company highlighted ArkClaw as a flagship agent product. Since its release, ArkClaw has undergone rapid iterations, enabling near-instant integration with enterprise collaboration tools such as Feishu, and deployment across messaging platforms including WeChat, DingTalk and Weibo, Tan said.

ArkClaw has also upgraded its cloud storage capabilities, offering integrated on-device and cloud-based collaboration, as Volcano Engine pushes deeper into enterprise workflows.

Tan said three factors are critical for companies adopting AI agents: model capability, security, and "skills" — modular functions that extend what agents can execute.

The latest Doubao 2.0 model family has achieved breakthroughs in multimodal understanding and complex task execution, placing it among the leading global tier, he added.
