Education ministry calls for safe, fair college entrance examination

The Ministry of Education of China has called for all-out efforts to ensure the safety of the national college entrance examination, or gaokao.

At a video conference held on Tuesday to outline security measures for the 2026 gaokao, relevant government agencies identified key tasks for the upcoming exam.

Fairness must be ensured throughout the entire enrollment process, with forward-looking resource allocation and strict prevention of privilege erosion, according to a release from the ministry.

The exam's role in selecting talent should be aligned with national strategic needs and technological development, guiding universities to optimize their academic program structures and promoting the integrated development of education, science and talent.

To realize a "safe gaokao", the conference called for rigorous oversight of test paper handling, reinforced security for listening tests in foreign language exams, prevention of high-tech cheating and steady reform implementation.

Structural optimization should better align talent cultivation with demand through improved enrollment planning, discipline adjustments, undergraduate capacity expansion and stronger job-market linkages.

Meanwhile, ongoing efforts are needed to curb utilitarian and short-sighted tendencies in enrollment promotion.

Student-centered services should be improved, covering public security, transport, accommodation, catering, health and epidemic control.

Held annually from June 7 to 8, gaokao is viewed as one of the most important exams for millions of Chinese students, as the results can largely determine which universities they are admitted to and their future career prospects.
