First batch of artifacts from Mexico arrives for Americas exhibition in Shanghai

The first batch of artifacts from Mexico for the upcoming On Top of the World Tree: Ancient Civilizations of the Americas exhibition arrived at the Shanghai Museum on People's Square late on June 6. [Photo by Gao Erqiang/chinadaily.com.cn]

The exhibition at the museum from July 9 to Nov 14, 2027, will be the world's largest and most comprehensive presentation of ancient American civilizations, displaying nearly 3,000 items from Mexico and Peru, according to Chu Xiaobo, director of the museum.

According to Josimar Fuentes from the National Institute of Anthropology and History, Mexico, an escort for the Mexican artifacts to Shanghai, the largest piece in the shipment was the Olmec Colossal Stone Head 4, at about 4.5 tons.

A second shipment from Mexico will arrive on June 8.
