China expressed on Thursday its condolences to Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the Latin American country, noting no Chinese casualties had been reported and that it stood ready to provide assistance based on the country's needs.
"China has noted reports of the earthquakes in Venezuela and extends its sincere sympathies to the Venezuelan government and the people affected by the disaster," Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular news briefing.
"We believe that, under the leadership of the Venezuelan government, the Venezuelan people will overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes as soon as possible," Guo said.
"China stands ready to provide assistance within its capacity and in an appropriate manner based on Venezuela's needs."
According to media reports, two powerful earthquakes, striking in rapid succession, hit Venezuela on Wednesday, causing buildings to collapse in the capital of Caracas.
Guo said China was closely monitoring developments following the earthquakes and remained in close contact with the Chinese embassy in Venezuela.
"So far, there have been no reports of Chinese casualties," he said.
