China develops defense capabilities to safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests, which do not target any other country, the Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The ministry's spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks when commenting on remarks by New Zealand officials, who were quoted by AFP as saying that Chinese ballistic missile tests and naval forays will become a "persistent" feature of the Pacific as Beijing expands its security presence.
Guo stressed that China is committed to peaceful development, and the growth of its military strength is an increase in the forces for world peace, and is conducive to safeguarding peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific and beyond.
