China and Austria are joining forces to launch an international choral week in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, bringing together choirs, music experts and cultural institutions from around the world for a cross-cultural celebration of choral music.
The Salzburg China Day Wuxi International Choral Week is jointly organized by the Salzburg City Tourism Board and the Austrian Youkuo Classical Music Institute, with guidance from the China Choral Association and the Beijing Minghua Piano Art Research Institute as the organizer. The main event will take place in Wuxi from Oct 16 to 19, with performances and activities held at the Wuxi Concert Hall and other cultural spaces across the city.
Built around choral performance and artistic dialogue, the program aims to connect Wuxi — designated as a "City of Music" in China — with Salzburg, the Austrian birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Wuxi was officially included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network on Oct 31, 2025, reflecting its growing profile in music and cultural innovation. Salzburg, long-established as a global hub for classical music, offers a fitting European counterpart.
Organizers say the initiative is designed as a long-term platform for cultural exchange between the two cities, linking Eastern and Western musical traditions through choral art.
The exchange will continue in Europe in February 2027, with activities scheduled in Vienna, Salzburg and other cities known for their musical heritage. These will include choral performances, city-based cultural tours and professional exchanges between artists and institutions.
A key highlight of the European itinerary will be "Salzburg China Day" on Feb 9, 2027, when Chinese choirs will present performances showcasing Chinese choral works and musical traditions while engaging with local artists and cultural organizations.
The project has also received support from cultural and tourism authorities in Salzburg and Wuxi, as well as related local institutions.
At a news conference in Wuxi on June 30, organizers unveiled the program and opened recruitment for participating choirs, marking the official start of preparations for the international event.
Officials said the choral week is intended not only as a performance platform, but also as a sustained mechanism for cultural dialogue between China and Austria, using music as a shared language to deepen mutual understanding.
