Zero-tariff policy for African goods sees fruitful returns

On Monday, Shanghai Customs announced the positive results of China's expanded zero-tariff treatment to all African countries that have diplomatic relations with, which began on May 1.

Since its implementation, the value of imports from the 53 African countries benefiting from this measure has exceeded 1.2 billion yuan ($176.8 million), with a total tariff reduction of 120 million yuan. 

Imports of African agricultural produce have maintained steady growth. Under the zero-tariff policy, the value of preferential African fruit imports hit 13.66 million yuan and fresh-cut flower imports reached 420,000 yuan, cutting the per-container import cost of fresh fruit by roughly 17 percent.

To meet the freshness demands fresh-cut flowers, Shanghai Customs has set up a 24/7 green channel, created tailored clearance plans, and allocated resources to streamline logistics and ensure quick, quality market entry.

The zero-tariff policy has also benefited industrial component imports. With customs guidance and facilitation measures, companies have enhanced clearance efficiency and quickly reaped tax benefits.

Shanghai Customs stated that it will continue to advance mutually beneficial China-Africa trade through efficient supervision and services, further expanding market access for quality African products.
