Seventy years ago, Chairman Mao Zedong swam across the Yangtze and penned the lines: "Now I am swimming across the great Yangtze, looking afar to the open sky of Chu. Let the wind blow and waves beat, better far than idly strolling in a courtyard."
Today, the annual event features two competitions: an individual sprint challenge across the river and group crossings.
The former covered roughly 1,800 meters and the latter involved a total swimming distance of 6,000 meters.
