Traditional dance makes new moves

China Daily | Updated: 2026-08-05 11:25

In a short video, rain falls over Dianchi Lake, softening the outline of the Western Hills in the distance. On the Danxia Bridge, a group of dancers dressed in black suits stands motionless for a moment before raising their long swords.

Then the drums beat.

With sharp turns, powerful steps and sweeping sword movements, the dancers transform a traditional Jingpo sword dance into a performance that feels both ancient and contemporary. The rhythm of Munao Zongge, one of the most important traditional festivals and art forms of the Jingpo ethnic group in Southwest China's Yunnan province, echoes across the water.

The video, filmed in late July, quickly spread across Chinese social media platforms, drawing millions of views and sparking waves of imitations. Many viewers are captivated by the contrast: traditional swords paired with modern suits, ethnic heritage presented through a visual language familiar to younger audiences.

At the center is Yuan Zhiping, a principal dancer of a Yunnan provincial song and dance troupe.

For Yuan, the popularity is not simply a result of a striking image. It reflects years of exploration into how traditional culture can find new forms of expression.

Most of the movements come from authentic Jingpo sword techniques, Yuan says. The turns, spins, and sword gestures were adapted from traditional elements, while the presentation was redesigned to create a stronger connection with contemporary audiences.
