Hong Kong residential complex fire likely sparked by lit cigarette ends: report

Xinhua | Updated: 2026-08-08 09:18

HONG KONG -- The major fire that broke out at a residential complex in Hong Kong last November was possibly caused by lit cigarette ends igniting combustible materials, according to the latest investigation report.

With no other ignition sources identified, the inter-departmental task force concluded in its report that the blaze in Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex in Tai Po, was most likely accidental.

The deadly fire erupted on Nov. 26 last year, resulting in heavy casualties.
