A village levee in Jiaxian county of Pingdingshan, Henan province, suffered a 40-meter-wide breach on Wednesday night, following extreme rainfall that caused discharge from upstream reservoirs. More than 2,100 residents have been relocated to safety areas, with no injuries or missing persons reported, local emergency authorities said.
Rescue teams from Henan and Hubei provinces are working to seal the breached levee. Narrow terrain along the small embankment has blocked access for heavy machinery, forcing rescuers to form human chains and manually carry sand and gravel to reinforce the damaged section.
As of Thursday morning, the flood conditions had gradually eased. The river's flow rate dropped from 2,880 cubic meters per second to 2,370 cubic meters per second, while the water level fell by 0.6 meters to 86.4 meters.
Repair efforts on the levee are still underway.
