WASHINGTON -- Five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University, prompting a temporary campus lockdown early Saturday, the university said.

The shooting involved "multiple suspects," and the campus was placed on lockdown, the university said on social media X.

When police arrived at the scene outside a university residence hall around 1:30 am local time (0530 GMT), they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One person was in critical condition, while the others sustained non-life-threatening injuries, the university said in a later statement.

The campus lockdown has been lifted, while both county and campus police are investigating the shooting, according to the statement.

It was not immediately clear if any suspects were arrested.

Virginia State University is located in Chesterfield, Virginia. Classes for the new academic year were set to begin on Monday, CBS News affiliate WTVR reported.
