A team of faculty members and students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University recently visited the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, gaining an up-close look at the latest practices in international maritime affairs and green shipping.
This initiative represents the university's efforts to accelerate China's participation in international maritime governance and to cultivate well-rounded, internationally-minded young talents with a strong sense of national identity, global perspective, professional competence and practical skills.
The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the safety of maritime navigation and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. China has been actively participating in various IMO affairs.
During the visit, Tianbing Huang from the IMO delivered a lecture discussing progress in the organization's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and addressed questions from the students and faculty. The participants found the exchange highly rewarding and expressed their eagerness to identify real-world issues through practice and explore solutions in their future research.
Hu Zhe, an accompanying faculty member, highlighted his research on crew safety in the context of the green and low-carbon transition in shipping.
"I hope to combine China's practical experience in the shipping industry with international cutting-edge issues in the future, contributing insights from young Chinese scholars to the global pursuit of safe, green, and sustainable shipping development," she said.
