Young creators bring Chinese stories to Edinburgh

The China Coal Mine Art Troupe recently presented two theatrical productions at the 79th Edinburgh Festival Fringe: the one-man play "Old Drunk Dream" and the physical theatre piece "Sculpture and Poetry." Both productions reimagine traditional Chinese narratives through contemporary artistic approaches.

In "Sculpture and Poetry," the actors use movements and rhythms to tell a fantastical tale of terracotta figures. Set in a surreal world where these figures are bound by rigid roles and unchanging destinies — armored warriors staring straight ahead, while performers wear eternal smiles — one defiant cavalry figure dares to break free, only to be reminded that they are mere clay, not truly alive. Though doubt causes his body to crumble, he continues to pursue the "red sun" in his heart. Inspired by his defiance, others join him, forming a caravan that journeys against the flow of time through ancient cities, marketplaces, and battlefields. Along the way, they search for meaning, freedom, and their inner truth.
