Sudoku championship raises the digital bar

The 2026 National Sudoku Championship came to a close on Thursday at Pegasus Watertown, a tourism destination in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province, featuring equestrian performances, competition venues, museums, art galleries, and leisure facilities.

The three-day event set several milestones, underscoring Sudoku's growing popularity as a competitive intellectual sport in China.

A record 1,471 Sudoku enthusiasts from 28 provinces and municipalities took part in this year's championship. In the team category, 244 squads vied for top honors, reflecting the event's continued growth and the increasing camaraderie among participants.

For the first time at a major domestic Sudoku event, the championship introduced a large-scale digital competition format, with more than 500 contestants taking part in a single round. Competitors completed the entire process, from reading the questions to submitting their answers on tablet devices.

The integrated digital system enabled centralized timekeeping, automated scoring, and real-time data collection, eliminating the traditional reliance on paper test sheets, manual collection, stopwatch timing, and labor-intensive score verification. This innovation improved operational efficiency while ensuring consistent judging standards and upholding fair play.

In response to player preferences identified in pre-event surveys, 59 contestants in the open category were allowed to continue using traditional paper answer sheets. The coexistence of digital and paper formats became one of the tournament's distinguishing features.

Notably, the entire championship concluded without any arbitration case or formal appeal, underscoring the effectiveness and credibility of its competition management.

Staying true to its mission of promoting intellectual recreation for all, the championship brought together participants across generations. Contestants ranged from young children and adolescents to middle-aged and senior enthusiasts, fostering an atmosphere of mutual learning and friendly competition across age groups.
