BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with losers outnumbering gainers by 544 to 371 in Shanghai and by 954 to 517 in Shenzhen.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.14 percent, or 3.02 points, to close at 2,114.03. The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 8,654.74, down 0.29 percent, or 24.94 points.

Combined turnover retreated to 102.2 billion yuan ($16.2 billion) from 105.46 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Stocks in real estate, securities and gold producers led the drop on Monday.

Poly Real Estate Group Co, the country's second-largest developer by market value, dipped 0.34 percent to 11.75 yuan per share, while Guangzhou Donghua Enterprise Co Ltd declined up to 6.67 percent to 7.83 yuan.

Security stocks dropped across the board. Shanxi Securities Co Ltd. closed at 7.25 yuan per share, down 2.95 percent from the previous close, while Soochow Securities dipped 2.50 percent from the previous trading day to close at 8.20 yuan.

Gold producers' performances were dragged down by price declines in the New York gold market. Henan Zhongjin Gold Co Ltd retreated 2.17 percent to close at 15.75 yuan on Monday, while Shandong Gold Group Co Ltd was down 2.11 percent to 37.11 yuan.

Stocks in heating and power plants climbed on Monday as a cold front brought temperature drops, wind and snow in the north.

Shenyang Huitian Thermal Power Co Ltd increased by the daily limit of 10 percent from the previous trading day to close at 4.95 yuan on Monday. Shanxi Antai Group Co Ltd, an enterprise involving mainly coal washing and coking businesses, also rose by the daily limit to close at 4.24 yuan.
