BEIJING - China's railway authorities have arranged extra train services to transport travelers using the newly opened high-speed line.

The Ministry of Railways (MOR) said Tuesday that 73 more passenger trains had been added on Monday to meet people's traveling needs during the three-day New Year holiday.

On Dec 30, 5.57 million people traveled by train, up 30.8 percent from the same day of the previous year, MOR data showed.

Bullet trains appeared to be the busiest carrier, as the single-day passenger volume of high-speed lines of Harbin-Dalian and Beijing-Guangzhou hit a record high on Dec 29, standing at 92,000 and 245,000, respectively.

The Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway, the world's longest, opened on Dec 26, cutting the travel time to about 8 hours from the current 20-odd hours by traditional lines.

The authorities expect more travelers to use trains over the rest of the holidays.
