The 37-year-old actor is rumoured to play a contractor in the forthcoming thriller where his special forces team is ambushed and killed during a raid in Pakistan leaving him to bring one of the world's most wanted terrorists to justice, according to Variety.com.
The film will be directed by 65-year-old filmmaker Sergei Bodrov and Lawrence Bender - who is known for 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Inglorious Bastards' - along with Nicola Horlick and James Gibb is producing.
The Silver Reel financed film is based on a script written by Jonathan W. Stokes - which made the 'Black List' in 2011 - and revised by John Romano.
Filming for 'Blood Mountain' is expected to start in April 2014 in Morocco, Africa.
Cumberbatch - who was catapulted to the spotlight in TV series 'Sherlock' - has been at the forefront of film releases in recent months with parts in '12 Years a Slave', 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' and 'The Fifth Estate'.
