Easy Talk: How important is English?

Last year, The Ministry of Education released a new plan for gaokao, China's national college entrance examination. The plan stated that English would no longer be a gaokao test subject. Instead, students can take English tests more than once each year, and only the highest score will be counted. For three decades, English has been ubiquitous in most of China's exams, but now will the reduced role of English in China's most important test have huge repercussions on Chinese students' English proficiency?
