6. Prawn

Prawn aquaculture here began in 1980 and the city in fact has a great advantage in it. The city’s Donggang area held the prawn aquaculture title, among counties and county-level cities, for five consecutive five years, from 1988 to 1992. During its best year, output reached 13,800 tons and its exports were worth 268 million yuan. Dandong has an industrial system that integrates production, processing and marketing and Dandong’s prawns earn foreign exchange from exports to Japan, the United States, and the European Union (EU).

However, because of diseases, prawn aquaculture declined rapidly after 1993 and, in recent years, the city has tried many ways to reinvigorate prawn business, and prawn aquaculture has gradually recovered. In 2000, it produced 3,058 tons, 180 tons of that for exports, valued at 132 million yuan. Prawn output is now increasing.
