According to historical records, the Guan Yu Temple was firstly built in Yuan Dynasty.
The worshiping of Guan Yu in China originated in the Song and prospered in the Yuan Dynasty. Therefore this temple was probably among the first built in Northern China. On Jan 12, 1996, it was listed as a provincial cultural relic.
Guan Yu was a famous general from the Three Kingdoms, a hero with invincible and unparalleled braveness and symbol of loyalty, benevolence and bravery.
Datong was a city of military strategic importance. The war-torn local residents believed Guang Yu could deliver peace and stability.
As a Taoist temple, it advocates the essence of Chinese culture embraced by people from all walks of life: loyalty, righteousness, benevolence and courage.
Datong government has restored and repaired the temple to better protect the religious and cultural custom.
