The cities of Taiyuan and Yangquan, in Shanxi province, got approval recently as pilot cities in a Science and Technology Ministry and Standardization Administration digital project.

Taiyuan has gotten involved in digital city work in recent years, in infrastructure, economy development, urban management, social welfare, resource exploitation, and environmental protection, and Yangquan began its digital city work some time ago. Construction work on its Baidu Cloud Computing Center has already begun and its wireless city project has had some initial success.

The "digital city" refers to a concept of expansion and integration of information technology and a global emerging industry strategy. China has 20 cities chosen for the first group of pilot participants in its related projects.
