Aviation and aerospace Industry
Tianjin's aerospace and aviation industry with an industrial structure characterized by superjumbo, helicopter, UAV, launch vehicle, and direct broadcast satellite (DBS), has become the only manufacture base for both the aerospace and aviation industry in China.
Petro-chemical Industry
Being one of the most significant bases of the petroleum and chemical industries in China and the only city that gathers the “big four” national petrochemical enterprises of CNPC, Sinopec Group, China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), and CHEMCHINA, Tianjin has fostered 11 general categories and more than 2,000 varieties of petrochemical industries including sodium carbonate, caustic soda, chlorine derivative products, raw salt, rubber and plastic manufacturing, and basic organic chemical products. The one million-ton Ethylene Project is one of the largest one-million-ton ethylene facilities in China. Moreover, Tianjin has formed a complete industry chain featuring the petro-chemical industry including oil exploitation, oil refining, ethylene production, and chemical industry, making the city a national petro-chemical industry base and important marine chemical industry center.
Equipment Manufacturing Industry
As Tianjin’s primary pillar industry, equipment manufacturing industry has formed a preliminary structure within which 10 major categories of traffic and transportation, dockyard, petro-chemical industry, wind power generation, nuclear power, water power, super-high voltage electric transmission and distribution, construction machinery, port machinery, and agricultural machinery, operates. Furthermore, Tianjin will enjoy emerging comparative advantages in domains of high-speed railway, high-power locomotive, city light-rail transportation, and large-scale shipyard now that major projects including CSR Corporation Limited, China CNR Corporation Limited, and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) have settled in Tianjin.
Electronic Information Industry
Tianjin electronic information industrial base is one of the first bases of its kind in China. Four major industrial parks of mobile communication, chip components, integrated circuit, and industrial power source have been titled national information industrial park with the Huayuan software exporting base being the national software export base. In addition, communication device manufacture, electronic device manufacture, and computer manufacture together take the lead in the electronic information device manufactureing industry as world renowned enterprises including Motorola, Samsung, and Zhonghuan have settled in Tianjin.
Electronic industry has witnessed the manufacturing and operation of Dawning, a supercomputer capable of 100 trillion calculations per second, which makes China the second country after the United States that is able to produce high performance servers. The area has also achieved a production capacity of 150 million cell phones, and more than 140 billion chip components, the latter of which makes the area the leading chip producer in China. A complete industry chain for integration line has been formed, including software designing, semi-conducting material producing, integrated circuit manufacturing, and packaging.
Biotechnology and Modern Pharmaceutical Industry
As one of the fastest growing Hi-tech industries in Tianjin, the biotechnology and modern pharmaceutical industry contains over 500 biomedical R&D companies and 157 pharmaceutical companies, including 36 foreign investment enterprises. In the year of 2008 China has confirmed a blueprint of “Beijing-Tianjin-Heibei province biomedical industrialization model zone” building around Tianjin Binhai New Area. So far in the model zone a complete biomedical industry chain combining product R&D, technology converting, manufacture, commercial logistics, and exhibition and communication, has taken shape.
New Energy Resources and Materials Industry
As a national new energy resources industry’s base, Tianjin has fostered a new industrial structure coordinating major fields of green battery, solar energy battery, and wind power generation. A production capacity of 600 million lithium-ion batteries, 300 million nickel metal hydride batteries, 100 mW photo-voltaic batteries, and 5600 mW wind power generators have been developed; and the R&D and manufacturing capacity of membrane, advanced ceramic, silicon and titanium materials are taking the lead in China, making the area an important production base of green resources and wind power generation equipment.
Light and Textiles Industry
The light and textiles industry has been Tianjin’s traditional industry which in recent years has been restructuring with innovative technologies and by attracting investments, forming an industry cluster. Currently there is approximately 2,000 various light industry companies and more than 600 textiles companies in Tianjin. As the largest bicycle manufacturing and exporting base, Tianjin holds an annual bicycle production of 30 million, half of the nation’s entire bicycle production. Also, Tianjin accounts for 90 percent of China’s total ’s carpet exports.
National Defense Technology Industry
The national defense technology industry is one of the key and advanced pillar industries in Tianjin. At the moment, the industry is working on high-end R&D and industrialization projects including Airbus A320, the new generation launch vehicle industrialization base, helicopter, high-horsepower diesel engine, and new type spacecraft.
