The city of Tianjin,has opened 40 food safety stores, according to the Tianjin Market and Quality Supervision Commission, to provide products whose quality is certified and to act as demonstrative sites.

Meng Hua, the commission's vice director of food supervision, explained that these particular demonstration stores are the first of their kind and had to go through a selection, monitoring, and assessment period to make sure they meet national standards, then added, "Regulations call for all of these demonstrative sites to meet 25 criteria, in licensing, distribution, employee health, facilities, and sales."

But, this does not guarantee that these first stores will keep the certification. If they display any inappropriate business actions through constant monitoring, they lose their designation.

Tianjin plans to establish no fewer than 20 of these demonstration stores by the end of 2015 and wants to improve management of them at the district and county level, so as to have some influence on more people in the food business and to get them to be more responsible for food safety.
