"Swan Lake" population spikes in Tianjin
| Updated: 2016-11-07 09:30:27 | (chinadaily.com.cn) |

A large number of swans recently arrived at the Beidagang Wetland Nature Reserve in Binhai New Area, Tianjin, which has brought about a "Swan Lake" performance in the park.

Experts said thanks to a sharp drop in temperature, there are already more than 2,000 swans resting in the wetland. This peak number is half a month ahead of normal years. Generally speaking, more swans will fly to the park in the next several days and they will stay for a month or until the water freezes.

Wang Hongfeng, a volunteer in the wetland, said visitors can see swans nearly everywhere in the wetland — in the reed pond and the private fish ponds. Seen from far away, the water surface is covered in white.

Two mute swans — called "the most magnificent swimming birds" — can also be found to inhabit the park. According to the data collected by the wetland, there are more than 200 oriental white storks, over 100 white spoonbills, and around 30,000 swan geese, bean geese, and wild ducks in the area.

To protect the environment and create a safe and quiet habitat for the birds, the management center of the Beidagang Wetland Nature Reserve has started to limit number of vehicles allowed into the park and increased the number of patrolmen to prevent bird hunting.
