Nankai University held a symposium on Nov 3 to publicize the new ideas of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China to its foreign experts and students. Yan Chunhua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice-president of Nankai University, reported in English to more than 200 foreign experts and students from nearly 70 countries and regions.
"In the past five years, China has made great achievements in economy, politics, culture, society and ecology," Yan said in outlining the basic situation, new ideas and highlights of the 19th CPC National Congress. He specified the new ideas of promoting balanced economic, political, cultural, social and ecological progress; the new approach to innovative, coordinated, green, open and inclusive development and the four-pronged comprehensive strategy.
"In the past five years, we have got some visible changes. For instance, Tianjin's villages recycled all the rubbish and properly handled it together; the city shut down a number of heavy polluting enterprises, strictly controlled the pollutant emissions to make the number of days of good air quality in the year rise significantly; and ensured that rural areas are covered by the rural medical care system, so those residents can enjoy social benefits as urban citizen do,"Yan said.
Yan's report was attractive to the foreign experts and students. Liu Zhengxi, a student from Egypt, said that China is his second home country. "China and Egypt are both ancient countries. China has had rapid development in recent years, while Egypt still has many problems. We should learn from China," he said, noting that Belt and Road Initiative construction is very hot in Egypt.
"We have enjoyed the fruits of the Initiative, such as an increase of 10 percent in the number of visitors to Egypt," he said. "President Xi Jinping said that China and Egypt are good friends, and I believe that with the help of China, Egypt will be better in the future."
Pan Andong, a foreign expert at the Medical School, said that the report was positive and encouraging, and included a lot of information that helps foreigners better understand the Party's governing ideas.
"My profession is medical science and I noticed that in the report of the 19th CPC National Congress, the idea of people-centered development was mentioned many times, which makes me very moved. I believe the Chinese people will enjoy a better life under the guidance of the idea," he said.
Nankai University has nearly 800 foreign experts and 3,000 overseas students.
